The LCD monitor uses a 3.0-inch HyperCrystal LCD panel that provides a high-definition display with 920,000 dots. It has a wide viewing angle of 176° in any of the four directions and provides a 100% field of view. Dual-axis construction allows it to swivel in both the horizontal and vertical directions so that you can shoot pictures in Live View in any angle, even angles that are difficult to view through the optical viewfinder of ordinary digital SLR cameras, such as high shots over the heads of a crowd of people or low shots from ground level.
The magnified Live View display function can magnify the displayed image by 5, 7, 10 or 14 times to facilitate precise focusing. Furthermore, to facilitate determination of the composition and horizontality, display of three different framing-assist patterns is selectable on the LCD monitor, including the golden section, grid and a scale.

Thanks to the acceleration sensors built into the camera, a vertical or horizontal level gauge can be displayed on the viewfinder screen, control panel or Live View monitor. This gauge is particularly convenient when the scene does not contain a horizontal line or when the light is very low in night-time shooting, and can be used even when the lens is oriented downward.
The E-5 is equipped with an HDMI output and microphone input terminals. Connecting a TV using a commercially available HDMI mini-cable allows still pictures and movies to be monitored in their original high quality. Connecting a commercially available external stereo microphone allows you to record audio in stereo.
The E-5 comes with three types of control panels - a traditional-style control panel like that on a film camera, a Super Control Panel that allows you to view current settings at a glance and change the value directly, and a Live Control that allows you to change settings while checking the results on the LCD monitor. Just choose the style that best suits the shooting conditions or your own preferences.

Wireless control of multiple flashes is possible using the optional FL-50R and/or FL-36R flashes. Any flash operation, including activation or deactivation of up to 3 flash groups, selection of flashing or FP flashing, and adjustment of the flash light intensity, can be set using the Super Control Panel on the camera.

The name of the photographer and copyright owner can be registered in advance and written automatically in the Exif tags of pictures.
Three different light metering methods are available, including Olympus's unique Digital ESP (Electro-Selective Pattern) metering that divides the image frame area into 49 zones and computes the optimum exposure value, the center-weighted average metering and the spot metering. With Live View shooting, metering is performed through the TTL image sensor and the 324-area ESP metering mode (divides the image area into 324 separate areas), the center-weighted average metering mode, and the spot metering mode are available.

The newly developed underwater white balance control makes possible underwater shooting* of colorful still pictures as well as movies. This function detects the underwater color tone, which can vary depending on various factors including the weather and the depth of the water.
* An underwater case (available from a third party) is required for underwater shooting.
Up to four sets of camera settings can be registered as "My Sets". Each of these settings can be selected as one of the shooting modes. If it is assigned to a specific button, instant recall of the My Set setting will be possible.
During Live View shooting, the camera can detect up to 8 faces automatically. Even when faces are dark due to backlight, the gradation auto function is activated for balanced exposure of foreground faces and background scenery.
Bracketing is useful when it is difficult to identify the optimum setting - for example, when shooting against light or when delicate expression is required. With a single shutter release, ISO bracketing shoots 3 frames at different brightness in 1/3 EV steps, and WB bracketing shoots 3 frames with different white balance settings. Exposure bracketing is available with 2, 3, 5 or 7 frames at different exposure values.
