The compact image stabilization mechanism is integrated in the camera to compensate for camera shake. Since the stabilizing mechanism is built into the camera body, it can function with any lens without compromising its optical performance. Two modes - I.S.2 (horizontal) and I.S.3 (vertical) make possible blur-free panning shots in either the horizontal or vertical direction. The image stabilization mechanism works also when the mount adapter (optional) is used.
A Super-Sonic Wave Filter (SSWF) redesigned to fit in a smaller unit is installed in front of the image sensor, where it vibrates at an ultra-high speed of more than 30,000 times a second, blasting dust away from the sensor. The tremendous power of the supersonic waves can even remove dust that cannot be removed merely by shaking the image sensor or dust that is attached by intermolecular force and cannot be removed by discharging static electricity.
The image sensor uses a High-Speed Live MOS Sensor featuring 12.3 megapixels and a high-speed readout. In combination with the high optical performance provided by Micro Four Thirds lenses, this sensor captures high-resolution images that accurately reproduce your composition with exquisite detail, rich gradations and natural colours.
The TruePic V image-processing engine is a refined version of the high-performance TruePic III+ engine, delivering clearer, higher-resolution images by exploiting the full performance of the lens. Sophisticated noise reduction that removes noise without obliterating details allows high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 3200 and beautifully reproduces delicate colour changes.
The "e-Portrait" scene mode smoothes out skin tones and texture. When e-Portrait is set before shooting, the camera saves the same image before and after compensation*1. The compensation effect can also be added in the edit mode after shooting. The result is stunning, pro-style portrait photos that perfectly capture the inner and outer beauty of the people you love the most.
The E-PL1 is equipped with an accessory port to enable use of the externally mounted VF-2 Electronic Viewfinder, which offers high-contrast, 1,440,000-dot resolution and a 100% field of view. The VF-2's live view functionality enables users to confirm the effect of camera settings before the shutter is released, so they can capture the scene precisely as they see it in the viewfinder. Dioptric correction is also provided to ensure a clear view for users who wear eyeglasses.

Once the target subject is focused and locked, AF Tracking automatically follows it even while the subject is still moving. So, all you have to do is press the shutter button at the moment you want to shoot.
* Accurate tracking of the subject may not be possible in some cases, depending on the subject or shooting conditions.
For easier and more accurate focusing, just turn the focus ring during S-AF + MF or MF operation to magnify the part of the image that you want to focus on by 7X or 10X or 14X*. And with the E-PL1, more comfortable focusing is made possible by using the externally attached electronic viewfinder. The magnified display also allows you to set the focusing point to an even wider area.
* Magnification can be alternated with dial operation.
A convenient Enlarge button makes it easy to check subject details when focusing an OM series or other lens manually. When using a lens without MF Assist, a single press of the Enlarge button shows the enlarged view, and a third press returns to a 100% full-frame field of view.
You can create a slideshow that mixes still images, movies, and sound. The camera incorporates five kinds of background music as well as slideshow control functions including still image fade-in/out, sound recording volume, and background music volume adjustment.
You can connect the camera to an HDMI-equipped TV set via a commercially available HDMI mini-cable and view high-quality HD movies and images together with stereo audio. With the E-PL1, you can also control playback with your TV's remote control*.

Image management software [ib] is provided, allowing easy uploading of pictures in the camera just by connecting to a PC. Uploaded pictures can be classified by event, and organized according to location or subject. You can easily find pictures of somebody taken during a specified event like a trip. Viewing, printing or even RAW development is also possible.

The E-PL1 have been certified by the Colour Universal Design Organization (CUDO) as a colour universal design whose colours and patterns can be easily distinguished regardless of any differences in individual colour vision.
