Off-camera Shooting

"Clip-on" flash unit attached to the top of the camera is not the only type used in flash photography. "Off-camera shooting", when the flash unit is fired away from the camera, lets you control light for a wider range of photographic expression.

Try shooting with even one flash unit away from the camera to see how big of a difference it makes in shots.

Left: Fired from a clip-on flash unit. Strong shadows are formed behind the subject.
Right: Fired wirelessly with the photographer holding the flash in his left hand. The light reaches the background, resulting in a photo that looks more three dimensional.
