Top-class image quality

The Zuiko Lens Systems is known for its excellent optical performance. Maximising that performance are the 20M Live MOS sensor and TruePic VIII image processor. These combined with further improved image stabilisation technology, provides top-class image quality among interchangeable lens cameras.

New 20M Live MOS sensor and new TruePic VIII image processor

New 20M Live MOS sensor

The new 20M Live MOS sensor improves pixel characteristics for enhanced gradations and optimises pixel optics for better image quality at high sensitivities. By applying anti-reflective coating on the surface of the sensor, flaring and ghosts are reduced. Moving object distortion that tends to occur when recording movies is also reduced due to the high-speed reading performance of the new sensor.

New TruePic VIII image processor

The new TruePic VIII image processor packs two types of quad cores on one chip, one dedicated to image processing, and the other for camera control and computation processes. A state-of-the-art process, which carries out parallel processing of sensor reading, AF processing, and image processing speeds up the camera and reduces power consumption.

Low-sensitivity image processing (Resolution Priority)

(Added feature in firmware version 3.0)

Detail Priority has been added to provide higher resolution in Low ISO Processing.

  • The default setting is Sequential Shooting Priority. The maximum number of frames is reduced in sequential shooting when Resolution Priority is selected.

Improved image quality at high ISO settings

Advancements due to the new 20M Live MOS sensor and new TruePic VIII image processor dramatically improve image quality at high ISO settings. Normal ISO speed (ISO AUTO) has been expanded to ISO 6400. These features let you capture detailed images with minimal noise even at high ISO settings. With firmware 3.0, noise that occurs when shooting at high ISO sensitivities has been reduced by about 1/3 of a step compared to firmware version 2.3.

ISO L64/L100 support

ISO L64 (ISO 64 equivalent) is now available for shooting at slow shutter speeds. In firmware version 3.0, ISO L100 (ISO 100 equivalent) is now available.

Rich dynamic range

Smooth gradations are possible even in high-contrast scenes.

Anti-reflective coating

Anti-reflective (AR) coating is used on both sides of the sealing glass for the image sensor. This feature minimises ghosts and flaring.

50M High Res Shot

This function is perfect for scenes where you need a higher resolution in photos, such as shooting artwork and landscapes. The camera moves the sensor in half-pixel increments while capturing eight shots, which are then used to generate a single high-resolution shot equal to that captured with a 50M sensor. Using the high resolving power of M.Zuiko PRO or M.Zuiko Premium lenses yields the best results. The new TruePic VIII image processor effectively suppresses blur caused by moving subjects. It is also possible to capture 25M-equivalent images if you want to keep the file size smaller.

RAW processing

  • In RAW+JPEG mode, three types of imaged are saved including 50M or 25M JPEG, 80M RAW (ORF), and 20M RAW (ORI).
  • 80M RAW images can be converted to 50M JPEG images in the camera, and to 80M JPEG images by using Olympus Viewer 3.
  • 20M RAW (ORI) images cannot be played back or processed in the camera, but they can be viewed and processed using Olympus Viewer 3.
  • High Res Shot RAW images can be processed using Olympus Viewer 3 V2.0 (64 bit OS).
  • The 20M RAW (ORI) image is the first of the 8 RAW images shot.
  • A tripod is required for shooting.
  • If the subject moves while shooting, the section that moved will appear at a lower resolution in the image.
  • Due to flickering, it will not work under inconsistent light sources.
  • The ISO sensitivity can be set up to 1600.
  • For flash photography, set the sync speed to longer than 1/50 sec.
  • Art Filter, Multi. Exposure, Live Bulb/Composite, Interval Shooting, HDR, all BKT and e-Portrait are not supported.

The world's most powerful stabilisation performance: 6.5 shutter speed stops

5-axis image stabilisation

This model is equipped with a new type of in-body 5-axis image stabilisation that compensates for all types of camera shake. When combined with in-lens image stabilisation, 5-axis sync IS provides the world's most powerful stabilisation performance equivalent to 6.5 shutter speed stops[1]. Even the in-body 5-axis image stabilisation on its own boasts outstanding stabilisation performance equivalent to 5.5 shutter speed stops[2].

  • 1: When using M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm F4.0 IS PRO at 100mm (35mm equivalent: 200mm), with halfway release image stabilisation set to OFF, when yaw and pitch are applied to camera. As of September 2016. CIPA standard compliant.
